Skin Care Tips for this Holi

Don’t let your skin woes stop you from playing with all the colors this Holi! The festival of colors can give your skin the jitters. Vegetable colors have been trending in some parts of the city, but it is yet to catch up with the chemicals that have been parading as colors.

For a stress-free Holi here are some tips compiled by our skin specialists to help you enjoy the festival like you should. They not only share tips to follow before playing Holi, they also share how to remove Holi colors from your face:

Holi skin care tips

  • Oil your skin: Roopali Agrawal is a make-up artist on UrbanClap, who recently got featured in YourStory. She advises, “Use a generous amount of oil on your skin. At least 2 to 3 hours before you start playing, oil your skin very well. Mix one part of coconut oil with one part of olive oil. Also, oil your hair and if your hair is dry, don’t forget to squeeze some lemon juice in it as well.”

  • Moisturize: It does not stop at just oiling your skin. Iram Kazmi, a partner on UrbanClap tells us the importance of a moisturizer before playing Holi. She says “After you have applied oil, and just before you start to play Holi, apply a water proof sunscreen with SPF 30. The SPF helps you protect your skin against the sun and the damage from the chemicals.”

  • Protect your lips by applying Vaseline petroleum jelly or a good quality lip jell with SPF 15.

  • Hydrate yourself: Vaishali Gaur, a dietician with UrbanClap, advices “Drink plenty of water. At least 2-3 liters of water before you start playing. Have plenty of citrus fruits because it is hard to drink all that water in one go. Most of us also tend to drink during Holi, which makes it all the more important to drink plenty of liquid before we play. The water keeps our skin hydrated and prevents the chemicals from the colors to act on the skin”.
  • Paint your nails: The nail paint thwarts the colors from seeping into the nails.

How to remove Holi colour from your skin
Instead of spending hours in the shower scrubbing the colors off, you can just follow the advice of our salon professionals and prepare yourself well for the aftermath of Holi.
Ms. Usha Garg, our subject matter expert, gives the tips to clean up after Holi

  • Try to use vegetable colors, instead of chemicals. They are easier to wash.

  • In case you do use chemical or hard colors, don’t scrub them off of your skin. Instead, wash them gently with a mild soap with high glycerin content.
  • Always use cold water. The general perception is that a hot water bath helps in removing the colors easily, which is not true. Instead, hot water makes it harder to remove the color.
  • Mix some curd, a little haldi, rose water and besan in a bowl and apply it on your skin. Remove it while taking a bath. You can also apply ubtun or multani mitti to your skin instead of this mix.

  • Do not wash your face repeatedly even if the colors are not coming off. This will only make your skin drier.
  • Apply milk based moisturizer afterward and an antiseptic cream.
  • Drink lot of water throughout the week, post Holi.

We hope this Holi you don’t feel blue when using hard colors and smile through all the colors this festival throws your way. Have a happy and a safe Holi!
