The New Year is just around the corner and if you haven’t any plans yet and are stuck at home wondering how to entertain the children – worry not! Here’s a mixed bag of fun DIY projects you can rope in your little elves for and spread the festive cheer.
Ditch the commercial fireworks and try this cool science experiment that is sure to up the kids’ excitement levels. All you need is oil, water, food colouring and a glass jar.

Fill the jar 3/4th with warm water. In another bowl, mix 4 tablespoons of cooking oil, and a few drops of different colours of food colouring. With a fork, gently mix the oil and colour. Pour this mixture into the jar of water – the food colouring will slowly slip out from the oil and into the water and begin mixing with the other colours, creating a mini firework effect!
Create your own shower of glitter to bring in the party at home! You’ll need a couple of balloons, gift wrapping paper, a hole punch, a funnel and glitter. Use the hole punch to make mini confetti circles from the wrapping paper. Using the funnel, fill the balloons with glitter and confetti and then blow them up to their full size. Hang them from the ceiling using brightly coloured ribbon. If you’re worried about glitter creeping onto your carpets and furniture, hang them outside and watch the kids go crazy popping these party starters!
Add a sparkle to the celebrations as you kiss 2016 goodbye with these easy to make glitter candles.
Cut out number stencils of 2,0,1 and 6 and stick them onto four different candles. Use slightly thicker candles rather than long slim ones. Spray paint the candles with glitter and then peel off the numbers so that it is outlined against the glitter backdrop. Light them up and watch 2016 melt away as you herald in a fantastic new 2017!
Nothing quite like a shiny disco ball to get the party started! All you need to make your own is an inflatable beach ball or large plastic ball and a pack of CDs.

Cut the CDs into small squares and stick onto the ball so that the entire surface is covered. Suspend the ball from the ceiling and watch the ball transform your party space. What’s more the video also shows you a way to make jewelry from CDs!
A fun addition to your plans to whoop, yell and scream with joy as the clock strikes 12!
All you need are two paper plates glued together, facing inwards. You can even put in some dried pasta or beans between the plates for a more noisy effect! Use a plastic spoon or ice cream stick sandwiched between the two plates, with a longer bit sticking out so you can use it as a paddle. String beads on a colourful ribbon and weave it around the outer edges of the plate – add in your own personal touches by painting, sticking or using felt tip pens to make fun patterns on the plates.
When the clock strikes 12, get the kids ready to rattle, shake and squeal with glee as you usher in 2017!
