Like many teenagers of his generation, Prajat grew up listening to the classics- the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, AC/DC. When he finished his schooling, he opted to study medicine, pursuing the safe choice without really thinking about it too much. He’d just begun his postgraduate studies at the Maulana Azad Institute of Dental Sciences, when the School of Symphony visited his college for an outreach program which, according to him, changed his life. It was during this program that he realised he wanted to take his art seriously because- ” It felt like the right thing to do.”
However, at this stage music was still just a hobby for him. Yet, he couldn’t help but dream of completely delving into music. He joined the Delhi School of Music and started to spend more time with what would soon become his life. This contradiction- of being stuck in a dentistry course while he had a heartfelt passion for music- felt a little bit like being stuck in the wrong relationship. All the while, his only thought was ‘Quit this ASAP!’
There was just one practical factor stopping Prajat from following his dream- how much could he possibly hope to earn? He eventually mustered the courage to start teaching the guitar part-time, so he signed up with UrbanClap while he was still continuing his studies. As time went by, he realised he couldn’t continue like this any longer. Besides which, he’d started getting more students and was confident that he would be able to sustain himself. Finally, he told his parents what was on his mind and, despite their disapproval, went ahead and quit his course. As they say, the heart wants what it wants, right?
Today, his parents are still not entirely convinced about his choice, but he continues to move forward with his passion. Framed posters of John Lennon, Bob Dylan and Radiohead decorate the walls of his room while an acoustic guitar, a djembe drum and a piano occupy a significant amount of the area. A soft-spoken individual by nature, when he recounts his journey, Prajat comes across as shy and still a little confused about the switch in his life. However, whenever someone asks him to play, all traces of apprehension disappear as he confidently strums the guitar. He explains,
Everyone is confused about choosing their path in life and maybe my confusion is even greater- the best part is music helps me express just that.
Currently, he’s working on forming a band with his friend and he plans to start playing and composing music professionally soon.
There’s no doubt that Prajat’s journey is awe-inspiring, to say the least but, if we were to take just one thing from Prajat’s journey, it would be this- whatever you decide to do, make sure it makes you happy. So, go ahead. Take that first step- dust that guitar, learn a new language, travel the world, learn how to dance! Just follow your dream and the rest will fall into place.
