Your paediatrician should be able to guide you with a basic travel prescription that includes essential medicines kids commonly need. If travelling abroad, it is also a good idea to check for what vaccines maybe necessary and in any case, carry a copy of your child’s vaccination booklet along. If your child has a pre existing medical condition, do make it a point to check if travel is safe.
There are a number of instances where you may need additional paperwork if travelling with a small child. If flying within the country, some airlines may request a copy of the child’s birth certificate or vaccination card as ID proof. If you have an adopted child, you maybe asked to furnish adoption papers.
Toddler appetites don’t always run on adult meal times. Plan for snack emergencies and carry healthy, portable snacks that can be easily eaten on the go. Granola bars, mixed dry fruit, wheat or ragi puffs, pumpkin seeds or fruit are good options.
Flight delays or bad weather can often hamper your regular holiday plans and leave you waiting for hours on end. Kids can get particularly cranky at such times which is why it’s always a good idea to carry a generous supply of their books, toys or art supplies. You could also play fun games like “I Spy With my Little Eye” or “Name that Tune”.
If you’re heading to a warmer climate, ensure you pack clothes that are made of natural fibre as synthetics can tend to aggravate sensitive baby skin. Always carry extra sets of clothing – to account for any spits up or diaper emergencies! Sunhats or bonnets child sunglasses and even a mini portable baby fan will also add to your child’s comfort in the heat.
Art walks and museum visits may thrill you but just remember that a toddler has a limited attention span and may get cranky. Ensure you plan lots of kid friendly activities – trips to the zoo, planetarium or an adventure park- it’ll help burn of their boundless energy! Pick a destination that has other fun stuff to do for kids – things like short treks or water activities are a great way to keep your little explorers happy.
