Ask your friends to stop you from going over the limit. Start making a note in your book to keep track of how many cigarettes you\u2019ve smoked each day, in the hope that you can gradually reduce that figure.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Sometimes, it even works. For a week or so, you don\u2019t touch a cigarette. When you see friends or colleagues smoking, you stop yourself and resolutely avoid the common hangouts. And then, one day your boss decides to yell at you for no reason. Or you attend that reunion and, before you know it, you\u2019ve had one drink too many and are on your third cigarette. Or you just succumb to the infamous \u201cjust one drag can\u2019t hurt\u201d syndrome.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2344 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/de927adv5b23k.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/3-2.jpg\" alt=\"3 (2)\" width=\"736\" height=\"356\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">So, when a friend of mine told me about how yoga can help a person give up smoking, and also related several success stories, I was naturally curious. I asked two of our <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urbanclap.com\/?utm_source=blog&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_campaign=kick%20the%20butt%20with%20yoga&amp;utm_term=UrbanClap%20Partners\">UrbanClap partners<\/a><\/strong><\/span>, whether yoga could really help a person give up their nicotine addiction. Here\u2019s what they had to say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Shinoj Varghese has been a yoga instructor for over 5 years now, however, before he took up yoga, he also used to smoke. In his words, \u201cIt\u2019s important to keep in mind that yoga is not a readymade solution for those who want to give up the habit. But, if you\u2019re serious about your decision, and you have the will, yoga can definitely help.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Another yoga instructor, Sapna Sondhi Dutt, who has been running her studio, Yoga With Sapna for over a decade now, believes, \u201cThe physical asanas in yoga can help you develop steadiness of the mind. This in turn, strengthens your resolve and, helps you develop your will power so that you can give up not just smoking, but any other habit.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\"><strong>So what exercises can help you kick the butt?<\/strong><\/span><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; line-height: 25.6px;\">Like Shinoj and Sapna mentioned, there&#8217;s no instantaneous miracle cure. However, they both agreed that, if someone practises certain exercises religiously, for a few months, they&#8217;ll definitely find the struggle to quit smoking that much easier. With that in mind, here are three techniques that will help you in your quest:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><strong>Cleanse Your Respiratory System:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Most breathing exercises will help you with this. A really effective exercise is the <em>Kapalbhati<\/em>. With this, you burn out any mucus that\u2019s congested in your respiratory passageways and cleanse them so that they are free to take in oxygen and pranic energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">However, it is important to ensure that you perform <em>Kapalbhati<\/em> properly or you may end up hurting yourself. You can also get a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urbanclap.com\/ahmedabad-yoga-at-home\">yoga instructor at home<\/a><\/strong><\/span> to help you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2341 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/de927adv5b23k.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/6-2.jpg\" alt=\"6 (2)\" width=\"736\" height=\"356\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Steps:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Sit straight with your spine erect and cross your legs in front of you.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Take in a deep breath and exhale quickly and suddenly, making a puffing sound while you do it. Focus on exhaling forcefully and not on the inhalation. With every exhaling breath, say to yourself, \u201cI\u2019m pushing out all the noxious gases right from the depths of my lungs and making my breathing passageways clearer.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">When you exhale, draw your abdominal muscles inward simultaneously. Your abdomen should rise when you inhale and fold when you exhale.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Continue for 10 breaths and then take a break. Perform 2 more similar sets.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Strengthen The Lungs:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">This is also a good way to measure the toll that smoking has taken on your lungs. Exercises like <em>Dhanurasana<\/em> expand the chest and someone who\u2019s a smoker will start coughing or spluttering because their lungs are not in good shape. However, it will also gradually help you to strengthen them as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8669 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/de927adv5b23k.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/shutterstock_515885956.jpg\" alt=\"Yoga at home\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" srcset=\"https:\/\/de927adv5b23k.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/03192617\/shutterstock_515885956.jpg 500w, https:\/\/de927adv5b23k.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/11\/03192617\/shutterstock_515885956-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/>Steps:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Lie down on your back with your knees bent and feet flat on the ground about shoulder distance apart.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Place both palms on the floor on either side keeping your as close to your chest as possible. Your fingers should point towards your feet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Inhale and slowly push your pelvis off the floor. Use your core muscles to push your trunk as high as you can.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Try to keep your trunk perpendicular to the floor while supporting yourself on your hands and feet. Allow your head to hang back and breath easily through the nostrils.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Stay in this position for about 30 seconds and then release.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Repeat this activity 5-10 times.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Calm The Mind:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 16px; line-height: 25.6px;\">Balancing exercises like\u00a0<em>Vrikshasana\u00a0<\/em>(the tree pose) are extremely effective for improving focus, concentration, and ensuring the overall balance between mind, body, and soul.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10949 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/de927adv5b23k.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/shutterstock_345684350.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"564\" height=\"377\" srcset=\"https:\/\/de927adv5b23k.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/03190457\/shutterstock_345684350.jpg 564w, https:\/\/de927adv5b23k.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/03190457\/shutterstock_345684350-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/de927adv5b23k.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/08\/03190457\/shutterstock_345684350-512x342.jpg 512w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 564px) 100vw, 564px\" \/>Steps:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Stand erect. Keep the feet together.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Fold the right leg and placed it at the top of left thighs with the toes of right leg should point downwards. The right leg should perpendicular to the left leg.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Extend your arms above your head and inhale. Let your palms touch each other.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Balance the pose for as long as possible. Try to keep your spine straight and feel the stretching from toes to fingers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Exhale and bring your arms and leg down.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Repeat the same with your left leg to finish one set.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Do 3-5 sets.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">To round it up, Sapna has one more suggestion that can be useful- the <em>yoga Nidra. <\/em>At\u00a0night, before you go to sleep, make a resolve to yourself. \u00a0As you lie down, relax your body parts one by one &#8211; the feet, the knees, right to your neck, back, and mind. When the body is in that very relaxed state just before you fall asleep, tell yourself in simple wording that you can repeat to yourself every night- \u201cI have the will and I will give up smoking.\u201d Repeat it three times.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2343 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/de927adv5b23k.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/1-2.jpg\" alt=\"1 (2)\" width=\"736\" height=\"356\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">You can change the wording, but it\u2019s important to do it because it\u2019s the last thought that stays in your mind. It keeps playing in your mind so that, even after you wake up, it will constantly remind you of your resolve, and can evolve into a very powerful practice.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: helvetica, arial, sans-serif;\">So how long will it take?<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Ultimately, both Sapna and Shinoj say that it\u2019s important to remember that this is not exactly a miracle cure. It\u2019s something that first requires complete focus and a strong resolve and then, it will still take some time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2345 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/de927adv5b23k.cloudfront.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/8-2.jpg\" alt=\"8 (2)\" width=\"736\" height=\"356\" \/><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">Shinoj himself took a while to quit smoking. According to him, the trick is to go slowly. When he first made his decision to quit, he set a deadline of one month for himself. Ultimately, he took 3 whole months to completely kick the butt. He explains, \u201cYour body is a temple. If you make too many drastic changes, it will refuse to accept them and you\u2019ll see a lot of side effects. What\u2019s important is to take the first step.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\">It won\u2019t be easy, but it&#8217;s definitely worth a try.
